This is a great board for work and especially high intense gaming. The file transfers are incredible, and coupled with the Black edition 3.2Ghz AMD 6 Core Phenom II, and a Radon 5830 series video card is truly a fluid gaming and multimedia experience. The MOB features are way cool, touch sensor on board switches, great diagnosis capabilities and much more. Get one.

Top Rated MB, December 20, 2010

The MSI 890FXA-GD70 is the ideal MB for those who like to push the performance of their systems. It is designed to enable you to push your processor to its limits! I was surprised at how easy MSI made it to overclock the entire system with a dial and LED indicators built into the board. Although not visible in the picture, there are sets of LEDs next to the memory slots, processor socket and the PCI-E slots that indicate how fast (relative to each other) each area is working and adjustments can be made on the fly while the systems is running. This made tweaking my system a piece of cake without having to use any software. The 890FXA easily supports all AM3 chips, I recommend using AMD’s Black Edition processors, which are specifically made to be overclocked (unfortunately, AMD is about to render AM3 sockets obsolete with the release of it latest family processors, codenamed “Bulldozer”). My only complaint is that all of the SATA 6GB and 3GB connectors are horizontal along the edge of the board rather than vertical, making the process of connecting SATA cables somewhat difficult with certain cases. You get a lot of features and versatility for the money compared to other high end MBs, however, it is too much for the casual user just seeking a replacement. If you’re looking for a big upgrade for a good price, I highly recommend the 890FXA-GD70.

MSI technical support ignores Linux users, April 3, 2011
This review is from: MSI AM3 USB 3.0 + SATA 6Gb/s AMD 890FX Chipset Motherboard 890FXA-GD70 (Personal Computers)

If you’re a Windows user and primarily a gamer, this review will probably not affect you. If you’re a Linux user and have a interest in virtualization, this may be an important read.

I needed an AMD board and wanted to upgrade my MSI 870-G45 (bought used). I’m not a gamer, but a system administrator looking to build an IT sandbox machine and many forums indicated IOMMU support wasn’t available from many of the system boards out there. Since I had an MSI motherboard, I initially wanted to upgrade to another MSI motherboard.

When I called MSI support, the representative stopped listening to my question about IOMMU at the moment I mentioned building a Linux virtualization server. He just kept repeating that the company didn’t support Linux and even refused to confirm whether or not the board supported IOMMU. I called in again two times more and had the same experience with each tech.

I believe that MSI should have answered the question since IOMMU is a feature of the board, and therefore OS independent. As it was, they didn’t, and so I bought a Gigabyte motherboard after speaking with their technical support. The Gigabyte engineer explained they don’t support Linux users too, but he did confirm with a product manager that their board supported IOMMU and even had an AM3+ socket.

In summary, I received poor support from MSI. I understand they can’t support Linux, but they could’ve confirmed the support of IOMMU. The poor MSI support caused me to buy a Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5, which included IOMMU, an AM3+ socket (rev 3.1) and great support (Thanks John!).
