Supports AM3+ out of the box (from Amazon)!, December 5, 2011

This board shipped with BIOS 0505 as of 11/30 (from Amazon, at least). For the first one to two months of Bulldozer’s release, a lot of AM3+ motherboards advertised to support AMD’s FX chips didn’t actually support the chips without a BIOS update. Of course, you need a CPU to update the BIOS, so anyone without a spare CPU was forced to RMA the board immediately.

Fortunately, Amazon is shipping with support for FX so I had no problem installing my FX-6100. Setup was a breeze and I had no problems setting up a RAID1 in my media PC.

I just wanted to get this review up quickly to let people with FX chips know this board will work; I’ll update this review later with a bit more detail as I spend more time with the board.

Everything listed as special features for this board works great. Even the Auto Tune Overclock Utility did a phenomenal job of giving me 15% power boost with stock air cooling and cheap ram! The automatic overclock of the onboard graphics gave me a 30% power boost with no additional cooling! The included monitoring apps are well designed. THE ONLY NEGATIVE OF NOTE IS THAT memory on the QVL (qualified vendor list) for the previous model (ASUS M4A88) IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE NEW M5 VERSION!!! According to ASUS the only difference is support for AM3+ CPU’s, but the QVL for the new board is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from the previous version and the Transcend AxeRAM TX2000KLU-4GK I bought off the QVL would not work in the board. However cheap generic High Performance DDR3-1333 ram from Micro Center posted perfectly and performed marginally great in benchmark testing. The ram that worked was UPC 618996173747 and sold for $19.99 new with lifetime warranty. In benchmark testing the limiting factor was the onboard graphics. While the included AMD Radeon HD 4250 graphics is more than adequate for any application up to light gaming and 3D, the benchmark compares its results to others with separate 16x PCI-E graphics cards with dedicated memory and high clocks. BELIEVE ME, the onboard graphics are GREAT unless your a hardcore gamer and will certainly be happy with it right out of the box and it can be disabled later if you decide to add a dedicated graphics card.

Works great with the AMD FX 8120!, July 5, 2012

I used this motherboard with a:
    a) AMD FX-8120 8-Core Black Edition Processor Socket AM3+ – FD8120FRGUBOX
    and a
    b) Corsair Vengeance 8 GB ( 2 x 4 GB ) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) 240-Pin DDR3 Memory Kit for Intel Core i3, i5, i7 and AMD Platforms SDRAM CMZ8GX3M2A1600

Got everything from AMANZON, shipping was fast!!

Everything worked well out of the box, the speed was excellent, the manuals were clear, all components worked. I added my old video card and a TV tuner with no problems. I was also able to use the original case of my HP computer, the micro ATX fits perfectly well. I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to update a desktop. Windows experience index was 7.5 for CPU and memory. I had no issue with the firmware, it was up to date.
