Finally a beautiful screen to my eyes!, September 24, 2011

This has been a long time coming as my first monitor (purchased elsewhere) was stolen as soon as it was set down by the delivery driver. But now that the prices were dropped I latched on to another.

I finally got this one setup and it was the simplest setup you could have for a monitor.
The base is sturdy and steady, the screen is practically flawless. The viewing angles are impressive compared to my old monitors. Not one problem pixel on the screen.

I have yet to put this monitor through all of its paces, but I have tried all the 3d modes and they work from good to fantastic. The first option is the built in 2D – 3D conversion. I have tried it on pictures, videos, and games. It really does add some depth. Enough to be useful in some cases and for games that you really don’t have the system for full 3d via the video card/s. It isn’t mind blowing, but it is useful. I tried it in Wurm Online, Grand Theft Auto 4, and Fallout 3. It adds depth with practically no ghosting, but not near as much depth as the other options do. Tridef is the provided option for 3D and you can choose top – bottom or side – side modes. the depth with Tridef is impressive with very little ghosting. Unfortunately, Tridef does not do Frame Sequential on nVidia cards apparently. I would like to be wrong about that because I would like to try Tridef in Frame Sequential mode. Since I am a nVidia GTX 260 user the only way I can enable Frame Sequential is by using an nVidia 3dVision controller and glasses, or the work around in the 3D vision forums that allows these Samsung monitors to be compatible with nVidia 3D vision. When in 3dVision Frame Sequential mode the depth is Fantastic and even the 3d vision test pattern comes out of the screen relative to my OSD menu. Sadly there is more ghosting than desired in this mode, but I think most of it can be reduced if not eliminated with some follow up tweaks or I may just buy a 3dvision kit and try the actual nVidia 3d glasses and ir emitter (assuming they can work with this 120Hz screen) instead of the Samsung 3D glasses which I think are Bluetooth?
UPDATE: I have worked with in my Windows 7 settings nVidia Control Panel and have achieved practically ghostless 3d in all modes of 3D including 3dvision Frame Sequential mode. I would also like to add that I have found the built in 2d – 3d converter in the monitor has added very good depth to many of my photos and videos while others receive little 3d depth. The 3D effect is now solid and very impressive on my nVidia system.

The glasses are light weight and comfortable to me. I have not used them long yet, but I have not experienced any eye strain or headaches which is common until you are accustomed to using the 3D functions. These glasses use a single CR2025 lithium button battery. I have considered purchasing rechargeable LIR2025 batteries, but they are 3.6v and may not provide enough milliamp hours to be useful, so I will simply purchase CR2025 batteries in bulk so they are really low cost.

I am definitely a fan of 3D now, and will be going through some older titles and adding some new life to them via 3D.

I would like to review a 3d Movie on this monitor but alas I have none yet.

The touch controls on the front are easy to use and the OSD is very nice and well designed.

The screen is very glossy and perfect for darkened environments like mine. Though there is a printer light that is now going to have to be taped over with a dark cover to remove its glow from my screen. As long as there is an image on the screen even reflecting lights do not show, but in dark scenes the reflections will be annoying. The screen quality is excellent in my opinion. The brightness and clarity is very valued to me. Even in the 3D modes with the active shutter glasses the screen is very bright and vibrant.

The super thin bezel around the screen allows this 23″ model to just fit my workstation. There is no noticeable heat build up except in the external power adapter and it is only slightly warm.

I believe this is the perfect monitor for my graphics and video work with its excellent color accuracy and while the glasses are not rechargeable, how much use can you really get out of them anyway? The 3D is a lot of fun though! All of the available 3D modes cover pretty much everything you could possibly want to try. I am very happy with this S23A950D from Samsung, still upset about my first one being stolen and losing all that money, but glad to finally have one of these fantastic monitors.

I do wish Samsung had included some kind of protective case for the glasses when not in use. Especially for the cost of one of these monitors.

I could not find a better monitor than this.

Not only is the monitor super sexy and sleek, but it’s got amazing color, even right out of the box!

Everything is perfect, the 3D actually gives a bit of depth too! 2D-3D conversion is great!

This has everything I could ask for in a monitor! Especially the unbelievable 120hz!

If you need a new monitor and you just want that perfect one, this one is the one to buy!

No artifacting when using a ps3 like some other monitors, no flaw and completely amazing design!

My only slight con is the screen is really reflective, but it’s not bad! I hardly even notice honestly. 🙂

This is my second 3D 120hz monitor. My first one was the ASUS VG236HE which was a beautiful monitor but it had a lot of hardware issues as my review on that spoke of. I was on my 3rd one and Amazon wouldn’t send me another replacement so they only refunded me my money. I dished out a little more and bought this sweet monitor.

The design of the monitor is a bit strange but it’s growing on me. The display is VERY thin and this is my first experience of having a back-lit LED LCD with ZERO bleeding around the borders which is actually quite pleasing. I haven’t tweaked it since I got it and I’m happy with the performance of it. I’m not a fan of 3D and more interested in the 2D 120hz aspect of it which performs well. 2D games performed better than the ASUS 120hz monitor I was previously using.
Since this monitor comes with the 3D glasses, I figured I’d give it a try with some games. I only tried the 2D to 3D conversion which actually does work. I don’t have any 3D movies or games to try out, so there was nothing to compare it with, but the conversion did add some depth to the content to an extent. I rather get the monitor for cheaper without the glasses but I didn’t mind too much.
Some other options of this LCD are the ECO options that help save power. There’s a motion sensor on the front as well as a light sensor that control the display brightness as well as turn it off if there is no motion going on. It’s options can be set by the user so that was a VERY convenient and pretty cool option I used. The screen would turn on when I sit down at my computer and turn off after some time when I would leave my desk without me needing to press any buttons.

This monitor does not have any VESA mounts and pretty much needs to be used as is which might be a negative for some users out there. The LCD I received actually has two problems that I will be exchanging for another one. I’ve had good experience with Samsung LCDs (knock on wood) so hopefully this was just one unlucky monitor. There is one dead pixel that can’t be fixed on my screen which is barely noticeable. Also when changing resolutions such as going from in-game to a desktop, maybe once a day or once every other day, the right half of the screen would be interlaced with vertical lines. The color would vary between blue or green. This is most likely an issue with the 120hz/3D aspect of the monitor so hopefully my next one will be problem free.

Aside from those two things I’m experiencing, I absolutely love this monitor. I will be tweaking my replacement and playing around with it’s capabilities more and will probably update this review later on. Despite it’s steep price, as long as the next monitor I receive is problem free, I’m giving this a full 5 stars.

    Edit: 1/2/12
    Happy New Year
I received the replacement for the defective one a while ago just never came around to updating this review. As I wrote in the comments, this replacement was in full working condition and had no problems. I never came around to tweaking the monitor for the best picture as I’m pretty happy with how it is right out of the box. I love the thinness of the monitor and it’s features. I actually wish it was slightly designed differently with VESA mounts so I can mount two of these on my desk. it’s beautifulllll
