Great Quality and Great Features, August 18, 2011

This is a great motherboard. The build quality is much better than most mobos I’ve worked with and that’s not surprising given that it’s in their Ultra Durable series.

I’m using it in a new i5-2500k build that’s intended for overclocking. I set it up in no time at all and I’m taking advantage of almost all of the features it has to offer: Intel SRT, USB 3.0 and Lucidlogix Virtu. I’ve got 16GB RAM in there, 2 optical drives, 2 RAID-1 HDs fronted by an SSD, and an additional hard drive and SATA hotswap dock. Sounds crazy but I which I had a couple more SATA (3 or 6) ports.

There were some nice surprises as well. Gigabyte’s got this great feature called ON/OFF charge that let’s you charge devices through one USB port even if the system is in hibernate (S4) or off (S5). It also provides more power to the port and Gigabyte says that it’ll cut charging time by up to 40%. Doesn’t seem like a big deal but I’d often leave my computer on just to charge a device which is really lazy and a waste of power. Now I don’t do that anymore.

Another nice little feature is Gigabyte’s Dynamic Energy Saver (DES) which really does work. I’ll let anyone interested read about it on Gigabyte’s site rather than repeat everything.

A few things I didn’t like are the edge mounted sata ports which (in combination with my case – Antec Sonata III) makes it really, really tough to get cables in there. I also which they had included a USB 3.0 header cable like some other manufactures since they’re really hard to find.

Overall though it’s a purchase I’m very happy with and don’t regret.

Original and replacement motherboard both failed, November 28, 2011

The first motherboard I ordered failed within 3 days after attempting to use their EasyTune6 software. I talked to Gigabyte tech support and I was told the motherboard was bad. Now, after about 2 weeks the replacement motherboard has failed from a simple computer restart. In both instances the PC failed to even make POST. I know Gigabyte makes quality products but I cannot recommend this particular motherboard and have asked for a refund.

    EDIT:
After viewing another 1 star review of this motherboard, I have found out that this seems to be a problem unofficially known as “boot loop.” It’s just getting stuck in an endless boot sequence. Some users have been able to remedy it, some haven’t. Googling “Gigabyte Z68 Boot Loop” and you will find all the information you need to know.

    Solid Performance!, July 29, 2011

When I say solid, I really have two meanings. First, the motherboard is of a heavy construction; in essence, no flex. Install your GPU, and the board doesn’t go up and down like a trampoline. The second is of more importance. The Z68 really works. The software allows non-bios adjustments to the CPU (in my case a i7-2600K) and to the memory. The Gigabyte is a little fiddly regarding the front-of-case wiring, but the performance makes that easy to overlook.

The board is easy to install (again the goes back to the heavy construction), has all the features of more expensive MBs, and is from a reputable company. It also will save you roughly fifty bucks from comparable boards from other manufacturers. I should mention that my original build used a Asus P8P67 board which arrived with a bad chipset, and enough flex to become worry-some when I installed a pair of MSI 560s. I have no idea why Asus feels that a light-weight board is necessary. I don’t care if the thing weighs 20 pounds as long as it’s works and does not feel like it could break in two.

It’s your choice, but I doubt if you could go wrong using the board.
