Clear, Crisp, and Affordable Flat Screen (Digital) Display, November 22, 2010

This review is from: Dell Professional P190S 19-inch Flat Panel Monitor (Electronics)

Pros: Bright, clear, sharp display; integrated USB 2.0 ports; accepts digital an analog inputs.

Cons: Not so slick with native video drivers.

Bottom-line: Given the Dell Professional P190s monitors’ image quality, digital/analog inputs, swivel, tilt, and rotation functionality, and built-in USB ports I would consider that money well spent.

The Dell Professional P190s LCD Flat Panel 19″ Display is a black 19-inch analog /digital LCD flat panel TFT (Active Matrix) display that offers both digital DVI-D and analog VGA inputs. A big selling point for the Dell Professional P190s for me is in the built-in 4-port USB 2.0 hub (more on that below). The monitor has a very slim lightweight bezel, with a black Y-shaped base; the overall visual effect is rather space-age and modern.

Like all Dell flat panel displays released in recent years, the Dell Professional P190s has an internal power supply eliminating the need for one of those cumbersome power bricks. Indeed, the AC power cord connects directly into the back of the monitor. The Dell Professional P190s is fully adjustable; it not only tilts 4 degrees forward and some 21 degrees back, but also offers smooth 5″ height adjustments (the monitor can be locked into place at the lower end for easy transport).

The bezel also swivels from 45 degrees to the left and 45 degrees to the right. Additionally, the Dell Professional P190s can swivel 180 degrees from horizontal to vertical and back again with the screen contents adjusting accordingly. Finally, the base can be removed from the Dell Professional P190s with the push of a button and the display wall-mountable.

    USB Everywhere

Like the Dell 19050FP and the E196FP, the Dell Professional P190s has four integrated downstream USB 2.0 ports–two of which are located on the back of the bezel underneath (hard to get to), and two located on the left side of the display. The monitor ships with a USB cable that marries the one upstream USB port on the Dell Professional P190s to an open USB port on the computer in order to give you access to the four USB ports.

The Dell Professional P190s is offered by Dell with desktops that have ATI and NVidia graphics (digital or analog) cards installed with drivers that can rotate images from landscape to portrait. If you were to purchase the Dell Professional P190s separately and the graphics card driver does not have the capability of accommodating the rotation feature of the monitor, you can purchase rotation software separately.

The quality of the display under Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows 7 is stunning at a full 1280×1024 (at 32 bit color), the maximum resolution for the display. The edge-to-edge screen displays text and graphic is sharp, bright, crisp detail with no hint of flutter, or dropped pixels. And the monitors’ display remains pretty much constant from a variety of viewing angles. The display is bright, but not harsh; after a few days of working on the computer my eyes don’t burn and hurt as they were prone to do with conventional CRT displays, and even some LCD’s.

Utilizing the Windows Vista video card drivers the (some) of the Dell Professional P190s’s colors were a bit saturated and muted; not so with Windows 7 I am happy to report. One should take pains to download and install the video driver’s specific to whatever video card you are utilizing and leave aside the native Windows drivers for the card.

Front panel controls are minimal, there are only five buttons (located on the far right hand side of the display): a power button, and three control buttons and an auto-screen djust button. The Menu button allows you access to the following monitor attributes: brightness, positioning, image setting, color setting, OSD setting, language, and factory reset. Manipulation of the various controls is pretty self-explanatory; even though I lacked an instruction manual I was able to figure the functionality in short order.

At the end of the day, I (and my eyes), are well satisfied with the form and function of the Dell Professional P190s LCD Flat Panel 19″ Display. For personal use the unit is a very affordable checking in at $239.00 from Dell (without computer purchase). Given the Dell Professional P190s display’s image quality, digital/analog inputs, swivel, tilt, and rotation functionality, and built-in USB ports I would consider that money well spent.

If you, like I did, want the large-view advantage of a 19″ screen without the larger horizontal foorprint, this is perfect for you (as it was me), since more than usual of the 19″ diagonal is accomplished via the height (as opposed to the width). Plus, the vertical and swivel adjustability allow for even tighter spacial constraints. I could not have designed a monitor for tight spaces any better. Simply thrilled with it! The USBs in the back are a little tricky to access, but not prohibitively so. Side USBs are great option too. Love this thing to death.
