It’s hard to believe that Corsair has only been around since 1994. It seems like they’ve been a pioneer of high-performance PC components forever. PC enthusiasts and hardcore gamers recognize Corsair for their crazy fast and reliable system memory. Lucky for us, in late 2009, Corsair decided to expand their expertise to PC enclosures, unleashing the Obisidan Series 800D. The full tower 800D, an all aluminum/steel enclosure, became an instant favorite among PC builders.

In the summer of 2010, Corsair introduced the Graphite Series 600T-a mid-tower case that targeted a similar audience of PC geeks who preferred the smaller form factor and lower cost. At CES 2011, Corsair announced the addition of the Special Edition White 600T, which not only sported a new color, but a side window panel with an interchangeable mesh insert. Join me as I take a fresh look at the Special Edition 600T.

Note: The regular 600T and the Special Edition 600T are nearly identical and I will refer to them both as “600T” except when necessary to differentiate between them.

    PROS:
    – Gorgeous looks
    – Spacious interior
    – Plenty of expansion possibilities
    – Great cable routing and management
    – Easy to open side panels
    – Flexible cooling options
    – Ergonomic I/O panel placement
    – Acrylic window and mesh panel inserts included
    – Drive caddies support SSD and 2.5″‘ disk drives

    CONS:
    – Premium price
    – Thin on documentation

    IN THE BOX
    Quick Start Guide
Mesh side panel insert w/fan screws
    Nylon zip ties (x8)
Hard drive & motherboard screws (x20)
    2.5″‘ & SSD flat screws (x24)
    Case lock keys

    AESTHETICS
The original 600T is a cool looking case, if not understated. The slightly rounded shape, all black finish and no-nonsense design work well together. The new white color of the Special Edition gives it an even classier look in my opinion. I haven’t been a fan of white cases in the past but the contrast between the white and black is visually stunning. At the very least, system builders now have a color choice. The 600T is also very large for a mid-tower case.

The 600T is by far the largest mid-tower case I have ever seen. The ABS plastic and steel construction puts the weight of the 600T at about 28 pounds, empty. My previous mid-tower case looks like it could fit inside the 600T. It’s definitely the polar opposite of what an Apple Mac Mini stands for, in terms of size. However, just like how every part of a Mac Mini is optimized for a particular purpose, so too is the 600T. My only complaint is that because of the side panel window, you can see all my aging components! There’s some motivation there to upgrade I think 🙂

    INSTALLATION
The mechanism to open the side panels of the Corsair 600T are quite unique. In all my years of system building, I’ve never seen anything quite like it. The two latch mechanisms are located at the top of both panels. Thumb screws? I don’t need no stinkin’ thumb screws! It is very easy to open and shut both panels. Be sure to spend a few minutes tidying up the cables on the right side though. It might be a little tough to shut the right panel otherwise.

The motherboard tray is not removable but there’s so much room, it isn’t necessary. As a convenience, the motherboard standoffs are pre-installed. There is a large cutout for easy heatsink installation as well. Power supply installation is also easy and there is a decent amount of room between the top of the power supply and the bottom edge of the motherboard for easy installation of the I/O panel headers. I mounted my Corsair PSU and easily routed the ATX 8-pin power connector via the cutout.

The four 5.25″‘ optical drive bays use a tool-free design that worked better than any I’d ever used. I just popped out the mesh bay cover and slid my DVD drive in until I heard a click. Unfortunately, the 600T did not come with a 3.5″‘ to 5.25″‘ bay cover, which means I’ll either have to get creative with my 3.5″‘ card reader or leave it out. The 600T has six internal hard drive bays, split between two drive cages. Both 3.5″‘ and 2.5′” drives are supported and mount on the included plastic drive caddies. You can easily mix and match SSD dives, 2.5″‘ hard drives and full-sized 3.5″‘ drives. The 2.5″‘ drives require them to be screwed in with the included screws, but 3.5″‘ drives can be mounted on the drive caddies without tools. The top drive cage can also be relocated to the bottom of the case.

The inside of the 600T is so spacious that the largest graphics cards have no problems with clearance, even with the top drive cage left as is. A Radeon 5970, which is about 12′ long, can fit with room to spare. Also, since the 600T has eight expansion slots, a 3-way SLI configuration is possible.

The 600T has some unique grommeted, cable…

I’ve owned many computer cases over the years but this one takes the cake. I really don’t know where to begin. Any website can show you pictures, and if that isn’t enough, you’re looking for comments on people who use it. I have stuffed an i7-2600K cooled by a Corsair H80 CPU water cooling unit, Sabertooth P67 motherboard, 16GB ram, 5-1TB drives, 750watt power supply, 2-4850s (recently replaced by a 6950), and a ODD. I have plenty more room for more drives and 3 more video cards. The best part of stuffing all that hardware into this case, you don’t see all the stupid wires. The routing for cables in this case is amazing. All the cables are in the hidden on the right side of the case, out of sight and out of mind (not crimped or pinched either).

I find it profound that I have purchased this case because it was white. No one makes white cases anymore, I exclaimed. My first computer was in a white case and I found that so boring. Every case after was a different color. The white paint job gives your computer a sense of class and style that you really can’t find anymore. It’s really a shame that Voodoo sold out to HP.

I will mention the only difference between this case and the black one is the window. The black case has a mesh area where the window would be (has mounts for fans if you want that sort of thing). The white case comes with this mesh area to add if you don’t like the window.

Lastly, the manual is a bit of a joke. It doesn’t explain much but with a case there isn’t much explaining to do. The one thing that stumped me was how they expected me to route a USB 3.0 cable through the case to hook into the back of the motherboard. I reached out to the Corsair FAQ area to no avail and ended up contacting support. There is a small latch at the top PCI bracket area to route it. I didn’t even notice it was there until they mentioned it. If you’re as perplexed as I was, I hope I saved you some time on that.

It’s worth the money, buy it already.

Wow… What cant it do?, May 8, 2011

First off, when I went to purchased a new case I was not looking at this specific item. My old Cooler Master CM690 was starting to get loud. It was always a little loud to begin with but when I recently purchased a new game that maxed my system out I noticed it was getting a little hot. I purchased an additional side fan to blow right on my GPU and it set the noise level over the top (5 total fans, all 120mm).

I went to my local electronics store because I like to poke and prod any new cases I buy and the unit I came for was unavailable. I looked into other options and found the Corsair 600T Special Edition and was impressed with its cable management and the fan speed controller. After much consideration I purchased this unit even though it was above what I wanted to pay.

After taking it home the first thing I noticed was the lack of directions. I initially didn’t care since most of the time I don’t use them anyway but I found there were some questions I had that normally I would have looked up, but there is almost no instructional information available for this product by the manufacturer at this time.
This was the only con I found, and it kind of ridiculous given the price, but in the end I couldn’t bring myself to mark them down for it.

The case has about every feature you could ask for. The side panels don’t have the one or two screws in the back, but two simple clips you pull down on the side. The spacers come screwed in the case but found the placement was setup for a larger motherboard. I easily moved them in place to fit mine. Unlike my last case there was plenty of room to work with when putting my mother board in. I use a large cpu cooler and it did not get in the way in the slightest. At first I didn’t like the screw you have to remove for graphics card installation since my last case had it built in but after getting it installed I noticed it seemed a lot more sturdy then in my last case, a plus. The hard drive went in nice and standard. The brackets that hold it are plastic like my last case but seem thicker and less likely to bend/break. The optical drive installation was nice and easy. I found the plates have clips on the inside, you push them in the push the slot out, nice and easy, plus my last case you pushed them in, and my young daughter ran into them and pushed 2 in permanently, that will not happen with this case. Bottom mount for PSU, and the case has a removable filter at the bottom of the case.

The case runs very cool, one front mounted 200mm fan, one top mounted 200mm and a rear 120mm fan. With those and a 120mm fan on my CPU the case stay very cool and it amazingly quiet. These were the two reasons I purchased a new case and I am very happy with the result. The top and front fans have white LED’s. Im not one for a colorful computer but I find they are not too bright (They get brighter if you turn the fan speed up) and since they are white, they add a nice glow to the computer.

The cable management is awesome, I couldn’t ask for much more. The space behind the plate on the right side of the case (Also removed with handles and not screws) is large and can accommodate all my wires easily. There are more slots to fit the wires through that you can ask for and only the tightest wires are unable to be ran behind the plate.

One tip for any installers (and another thing we could use an instruction manual for):The fan control plugs have a piece of plastic that I think is just for protecting the connections on it. Pull it off and you will be able to connect your fans to them. Also, the hard drive bays are able to be removed and configured. I found this out after installation and had to go back and make some changes. As for the keys that it comes with, I can easily assume what they are for but I cant find where the keyhole is. I don’t think I would use them but geez, at this price where is my manual?

In the end this case is awesome in almost every way and its lack of a manual wont make me mark it down. But I sure am tempted…..
