an excellent consumer model, a fair professional one, December 14, 2009

This review is from: Samsung P2370HD 23-Inch Full 1080p HDTV LCD Monitor – Black Rose (Personal Computers)

The P2370HD is an exceptional monitor for people with modest demands of their display. On the plus side, it has very good colour for a TN-type panel (more on this in a second), absolutely fantastic connection options, one of te fastest displays in current availability and a bright, vibrant picture which is only offset by a merely-average black level and some backlight bleed with extremely dark images (helped by Dynamic Contrast but not in all situations). It lacks a pivot, a terrible omission, but is still fairly stable on its (non-adjustable) base. It connects to 4:3 and 16:9 sources, even composite and component SD sources, as well as HDMI, DVI and VGA sources (but DualLink DVI-D is strongly advised), and the 1920×1080 native resolution is perfect for 16:9 movies and BluRay.

Thus, if you simply need a very good TV or home computer display, stop reading now and get out your credit card. However, this is only a *fair* monitor for professional photo or graphics work. Like all TN displays, it suffers from slight but significant changes in gamma when viewed more than a few degrees off-axis, and even at 6500 K has a teensy pink tinge which can be compensated for with good colour calibration, but with a corresponding reduction in gamut. Despite sRGB’s 2.2 gamma, this monitor performs much better closer to 1.8 or to its native gamma of 2.7+. There is also faint banding on grey ramp tests which is to be expected from a 6-bit display, again compensatable by compressing the dynamic range, but then it also takes away from the contrast range the monitor has to offer. Incidentally, don’t use Dynamic Contrast when connected to your PC or Mac, it’s really very distracting. Adjust the contrast and brightness yourself.

Note that all of the things I’ve complained about will go completely unnoticed by probably 90% of customers and this monitor outperforms a great many lesser displays which show problems similar to this much worse, which is why I gave it the four-star rating. However, for the 10% of us who need a colour-perfect display and can tolerate a slightly slower speed, an IPS panel would be strongly advised, even for a display that is (for a TN) as good as this one. While I’m keeping mine to use as — surprise! — a television set, I’ll be buying an IPS panel for my photo work. But everybody else will love it.

Yeah that’s right. I saw 1080p for $250 and jumped on it. I NEVER use this “monitor” as a monitor, so I cannot review that aspect of the P2370HD. There are only a handful of professional reviews on this product; the most notable being the awful CNET reviews and stupid youtube video showoffs and unboxings. Ignore that crap. Read on so you don’t have to read 500 more customer reviews on google.

Lemme start out with a true analysis of what everyone says is good or bad about this Monitor/HDTV.

A lot of people complain about the sound. Well at first it does sound a little muffled, but just slightly. There is an option in the sound menu called HD surround. Even though I don’t own an external speaker set, it makes the sound noticeably better for some reason. It also makes me feel like wealthy audiophiles who have an extra 600 dollars for Bose speakers were trying to find SOMETHING to complain about (plus usually in their reviews they talk about this TV a “kitchen TV!”). I love this TV’s sound personally.

The next complaint that I hear from a LOT of people makes absolutely NO SENSE WHATSOEVER. “This product is more of a monitor than an HDTV.” NONSENSE. This HDTV’s picture is beautiful. I use this exclusively as an HDTV for my cable box and my PS3 via HDMI. With the PS3, blu-ray’s and games look brilliant. Uncharted 2 ad Gran Turismo 5 Prologue look so stunningly beautiful that I sometime lose/die because I just want to observe the wonderful graphics. As for the cable box, it looks great as well. Especially cartoons. In HD cartoons look incredible. Some movies look better than others (all in HD but some look sub HD. It depends on the station. Trust me I know what NON HD looks like). But movies in blu-ray (PS3) are all just AWESOME. THe colors are better than any TV, Ive ever seen. The only bad side is that every time I want to switch from my PS3 to watch TV, I have to switch HDMI cables because there is only one port.

Only one complaint that I can agree with to some extent is this. “The viewing angles are extremely limited.” Its true. I am lucky enough to have my bed positioned to the exact height and angle where I can be DIRECTLY in front of the screen rather than below, above, or off to the left, right. The TV does not pivot forward, so do not buy if you have a high shelf/stand intended for use with this HDTV. I’d recommend using a small computer desk (since most use this as a computer that goes without saying).

The point of my review was to convince all who are skeptical of this product to not be afraid to jump on such an opportunity. I have not had the dreaded “turn off and on by itself problem” either. IT IS A SMART PURCHASE IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE IT AS JUST AN HDTV, LIKE MYSELF. I saved 100 dollars by buying a superior, larger product, rather than sticking to the standard 22 inch 720p Samsung HDTVs that cost 350 dollars for some odd reason. I’ve waited half a year for this TV, and after reading COUNTLESS reviews over ad over and over, and thinking about buying the Samsung 2333HD or the T220hd, I just went for the best and came out with a major WIN.

BTW, this review is coming from a Sony PlayStation fan-boy who prefers quality in gaming and movies. I assure you that this does EVERYTHING that any other HDTV of it size can do, plus the computer option. The only downside is the viewing angles. BUY IT (unless you are buying the Samsung 2333HD which has an 10000:1 DMC with an annoying blue light in the front lol)(Or the T220hd which had an oddly shaped screen).

    *****IMPORTANT UPDATE*****
Yeah, it’s May 12th 2011 and my TV has a problem. My HDMI port is broken. If you are planning on buying this TV, CONTINUE READING THIS. As I mentioned there is only 1 HDMI port. Every day, twice a day, I switch HDMI cables to watch TV or play on the PS3. I had no idea that HDMI ports weren’t made for constant use, meaning that the constant tugging and connecting killed the port. I lift weights and I’m heavy-handed so I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did, but had I known this, I would have immediately purchased an HDMI splitter alongside the TV. I now realize that this monitor doubles as a TV, not the other way around, hence only 1 HDMI port. Too bad I had to learn all this the hard way, and to put the icing on the cake, my Xbox is being shipped as I write and I’m out of money and a TV! I have 5 Xbox game manuals to read over and over now. Great. Just great. I wish I had someone to warn me like I’m warning you lol. I promise to update the situation whenever I get the cash to run down to Geek Squad headquarters.

    *****UPDATE May 15th, 2011*****
OK, so I settled with the PS3 component cables to play some games. Specifically the Sony cables because off the wall components tend to SUCK, unless its HDMI. I am glad to inform you that I see ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE between HDMI and component on this television. Yes the sharpness and…

I bought this monitor to replace my old Samsung 17″ monitor.

It has been a wonderful replacement so far.

    A couple things to note:

    1. The monitor does not have a height adjustment but it does have front to back tilt built into the stand.
    2. Make sure to securely tighten the screw under the base when attaching the stand to the monitor several people have complained the stand is wobbly if you do not tighten this screw tightly it will be.

This is a great monitor do yourself a favor and buy it.
