This is an ‘OEM’ version for DELL… Be careful.,
OEM versions of Windows are not cheaper because they have no retail box, they’re cheaper because they’re ‘crippled’ versions sold to ‘Original Equipment Manufacturers’ or system builders/resellers who are supposed to be pre-installing and including the software with computers/hardware. Microsoft does not approve of OEM software being sold separately to mere mortals like us who are able and willing to install it on our own computers but unwilling to pay Microsoft’s ridiculously high retail prices. This product is also a DELL version so the situation is even more complicated. I would highly recommend not risking a branded version unless you’re going to use with the same brand of system. Even then – IMHO – you’re taking a chance with one branded for DELL – they’re notorious for their proprietary hard/software. If you’re going to buy an OEM Windows 7 Pro make sure it’s not branded. There are much cheaper non branded ones available from Amazon, Buy com & other places. (Be sure to choose a well known company with lots of good reviews.)
Microsoft denies OEM product purchasers access to MS customer support (no great loss in my personal opinion) but more importantly the software is “tied” – their word, not mine – to the motherboard within whichever computer it’s first installed and activated in and therefore cannot be used with any other motherboard. Microsoft considers the motherboard IS the computer.
So – If your motherboard fails you must replace it with the same model (or a newer version of that model if the identical one is no longer available) to have any hope of using the same licensed copy of Windows 7. You’ll probably have to phone Microsoft and attempt to convince them to reactivate your Windows license again but don’t let them know it’s a new motherboard..! Change your motherboard for a different brand or even a radically different model from the same brand and you’ll definitely be forking out for another licensed copy of Windows 7 as well.
Retail versions of Microsoft allow you to change any part of your computer (even the motherboard) and re-install Windows, although you can’t do it too often or dear old Big Brother MS will block your key and you’ll have to call and beg…
The whole thing sucks if you ask me, but of course this is Microsoft we’re talking about here – they’re far too proud of their products and hate giving anyone a break on their prices if they can possibly avoid it.
