Perfectly Portable Elegance,
The Lenovo ThinkVision LT1421 is a fantastically sleek and simple option for the mobile professional or student who wants the convenience and benefits of a second monitor.
Setup is a breeze with Windows 7: plug it in using only the provided USB cable (it is a Y-cable, but I only needed to use one USB port), let Windows Update search for the drivers and within 5 minutes you’re off to the multitasking races!
As has been mentioned in other reviews, this is NOT a multimedia monitor (due mainly to the limitations of the data rates that USB 2.0 can handle). It is, on the other hand, a nice tool to have for working with multiple documents or web pages and for working in groups. Not only will you be the envy of your work/study group due to the Lenovo’s slim form factor and satiny black finish, but you won’t have to have anyone looking over your shoulder to share your screen (a huge blessing after that second helping of garlic bread, rest assured).
The viewing angle and the color reproduction are more than acceptable for a USB-powered monitor and the brightness is surprisingly excellent (a good excuse to wear your sunglasses at night, if you’re so inclined). The simple brightness control along with the built-in tilt stand and handy cover/base plate complete what is a fantastic overall package.
All in all, the Lenovo ThinkVision LT1421 is great at what it does: provide a beautiful secondary display for multitasking with documents, web pages, etc. When purchased with the proper expectations (ie. gaming and streaming Netflix on this monitor will leave you with a hollow feeling in your wallet) this little monitor is sure to please.
EDIT: My previous statements concerning this device’s suitability as a multimedia monitor are inaccurate. They were based upon using this device with a modestly designed dual-core laptop setup. I have now also tested it with my quad-core desktop rig and the results are quite different. Streaming Netflix (Apocalypto, specifically) yielded a fine picture with little artifacting and no sound sync issues. Therefore, I would amend my previous review and say that the multimedia capabilities of the Lenovo are more a function of the overall processing power of your CPU rather the limitations of the USB-interface.

Best companion for my laptops,
After spending two minutes installing the driver (both on CD and online by searching for “LT1421 driver”), the portable LCD works right after connecting to a USB port. It is amazing that a USB indeed supports an external LCD of very good brightness. With the software, it is easy to change resolutions and arrange it on the left or right sides of the laptop. I settled down with placing it to the right. The text and pictures are very clear. I can see the screen-door effect mentioned by others, but it does not bother me. The tilt angle can be adjusted, so it can be used comfortably on tables of different heights. I’ve taken it with me on one trip so far and loved it. I left it in my backpack through the airport security check. It makes my text editing job about 15-20% more efficient. Yesterday, I thought about bringing it out of my backpack in a Starbucks LOL. The screen has an anti-reflection coat, which I found very important for portable LCDs.
PROS:
Portability
Good software
Change of tilt
Sufficiently bright
Clear text
Reasonable price
CONS:
The travel cover is not easy to open (it took me 2 minutes to figure out a good way – to open the corner first)
The USB cable is too long (some might need it, but I ended up buying a 1-foot micro-USB cable for $1.99)
Bottomline: the best portable LCD out there, and it is affordable

Better than Toshiba USB Mobile LCD monitor,
I have been using Toshiba USB Mobile LCD monitor for about 9 months. At that time, Toshiba was the only option for USB LCD monitor, and I actually liked it very much. I did have some issues with the screen quality and the viewing angle with Toshiba, and Thinkvision LT1421 addressed these issues.
Compared to Toshiba, LT1421 has much more crisp screen and quite a bit brighter. The viewing angle is also much better and the screen is less grainy. I also like the fact that LT1421 comes with a kickstand, unlike the bulky case I had to use in order to keep it standing for Toshiba. LT1421 is also smaller and lighter although it has the same screen size as Toshiba. The only gripe I have with LT1421 is that it doesn’t have the power button (it does have better brightness control though) so I have to detach the USB cord from computer in order to power off. It’s annoying but not a show stopper as I use it with laptop, and there’s no need to keep the monitor attached to the laptop unless I need to use it.
Overall, Toshiba LCD was still a very nice product, but Lenovo just came out with a better one a year later and I am glad I switched it.
