Great Product,
I have never felt the need to post a review on a product until now. This drive is flawless compared to the Seagate and Western Digital external it replaced. The design is sleek and functional, it is a little chunkier than my Seagate and WD but cools much better. The bottom is vented and I would like to think there is a cooling fan behind the vent but I am unsure. Either way after hours of writing data, and encrypting the drive the exterior is just barely warm with no slow down of performance. This is impressive compared to my Seagate which would be hot to the touch after 2-3 hours with a considerable loss of performance. The transfer speed on this drive is also very fast, using the USB 3.0 connection I was writing to the drive at 60mb/ps on average from an internal sata 2 drive. I can’t comment on the bundled backup software or the online cloud storage because I formatted the drive out the box. My only complaints about this drive is I would like to sit it on its side but there is no label to tell you which side is up so you don’t know rather the drive is upside down or not which if you plan to keep in the vertical position does not apply, and there is no on/off switch so to turn the drive off you have to unplug it. These things may not bother you. Overall I would definitely recommend this drive to anyone who needs fast reliable external storage. I ordered mine from J&R with expedite shipping, it arrived in 2days as promised.

Hand a problem, and tech support was amazing!,
I just recieved my Hitachi touro desk pro in the mail. While reformatting it for my Mac I ran into a problem that unmounted the drive and it did not show up anymore. (tip for mac users: You have to go into partition and select 1 partition with the 3TB drives. and then format. The bigger drives need to be repartitioned due to the mass space.) I called tech support and was hearing a real person within 2 minutes. Tony the tech guy was very helpful through the process and then explained to me why it happened. Guy knew his stuff. I am currently backing up a ton a files and cant even hear the drive running. and the USB 3.0 is very fast. I recommend this drive not just because of its great build and price but also because of the tech support. 1 phone call and 5 minutes later my problem was fixed. Thanks Hitachi for putting my faith back into customer service.

Extraordinarily unreliable, and bad return policy,
I have many USB external drives in my home, among 4 computers and a NAS. As larger drives have gotten cheaper, I have routinely upgraded. I currently have 12 USB drives, plus have had at least that many that over the years I have “retired”. I have NEVER had a drive fail out of the box, until now. I bought 2 of these. One works fine, so far (about a month of light service, but I am very nervous about it). The other failed after about 10 minutes. Strange failure, Windows could see there was something on the USB port, and tell that it was a drive, but could not read the size of the drive, or how much data was on it. I would have reformatted it, but any attempt to click on the drive would crash Windows.
Got an RMA from Hitachi, had to ship it back at my expense, of course. After several weeks they sent be back a REFURBISHED drive. Now I have paid full retail price for a NEW drive, PLUS shipping, and end up with a refurb. Bad deal.
But it gets better. Guess what? Refurb drive lasts about one hour before failing just like the first one! Frankly, it may even be the same drive, I didn’t keep the serial number of the first one I returned. OK, one a drive fails out of the box, electronics can fail. But 2 in a row? That is a bad record!
Got another RMA, and will have to pay shipping a second time, go without the drive for several weeks, and will probably get another refurb drive. After paying for a new drive PLUS shipping costs TWICE.
Lest I be accused of somehow causing the failures, see paragraph one, above. I have a dozen USB drives currently in service on my various computers, including a twin of this one, and all operate fine.
Poor quality, and a return policy that is unfair to customers (pay for a new drive, get a refurb!). I recommend staying away from this drive, after having the drive and replacement drive both suffer infant mortality. Needless to say, I am never going to buy Hitachi again, under any circumstances. My advice to you: Only buy Hitachi if you like risking your data to sudden drive failure, packing and shipping your drive back to them at your expense, ending up with an equally unreliable replacement, and probably a refurb to boot. Sound like a good deal?
