IPS Baby!,
There are some limitations to this monitor but to be very clear it is far superior to any monitor based on TN displays (which is 99% of them).
The best monitors in terms of viewing angle, color gamut and accuracy are PVA and s-IPS with CFL back-lighting. By contrast, LED back-light uses less power and typically enables higher contrast ratios, while TN monitors are generally cheaper and faster (which is important for games).
But if you are into photographic work you need to know that a typical LED monitor can only cover around 80% of all the colors the human eye can detect. A CFL back-light typically provides better than 100% of the colors we can see.
In terms of vertical viewing angle (if you move your head above or below the center of the screen) the TN monitors are horrible. Try it in a store and you will see dark banding and color washout. This does not happen with PVA and IPS monitor so professionals and serious users will appreciate the AOC monitor with its e-IPS display panel.
The AOC monitor is something of a price breakthrough. It is very sleek and a nice compromise for computer professionals such as myself. Casual gaming including First Person Shooters is very acceptable to me, although hard core gamers may protest!
Full kudos to AOC for their efforts on behalf of our eyes, our purses and our economic downturn! Don’t worry about the lack of a DVI-D input because the HDMI input is compatible and cross-over cables are commonly available.
The Prince of Monitors is still the Dell 2408 but the AOC is a wonderful compromise for day-to-day work. My other reservation was the early pricing from Amazon. The cost crept up from the launch price by almost $10 but has subsequently dropped back. The real excellence of this monitor is its price-point for IPS quality, so I ended up saving myself $40 (including postage) by purchasing elsewhere. However by the time you read this review I’m sure Amazon will be closer to a competitive price.
No, I had never heard of AOC either but I have not found any reason to be suspicious about their quality – of course time will tell.

Great for Gaming and Movies,
My first IPS.. First AOC product..and loving every minute of it.
I play Skyrim, WoW, Diablo III Beta, SWTOR ect..
Was very hestitant to buy an IPS for gaming, but all professional reviews states they saw no ghosting issues w/ games so I took a chance.
I can tell you gaming on this IPS is phenominal! What an experience.
In additions my photos, internet browsing, ect.. all enchanced now in addition to the great gaming experience.
Base seems flimsy but looks great and no complaints at all.

Great Monitor, Excellent Black levels,
If you’ve never used and IPS panel you will notice the difference between it and your old TN monitor instantly.
Pros:
The picture looks excellent from all angles which is ideal for the purposes of photo or web design/editing for the hobbyists out there.
The blacks are present and distinguishable. Out of the box it’s great, but if you change the gamma setting to gamma2 you can distinguish as low as the 2nd square on a black level test which is amazing for this price range. Other comprable monitors that I’ve seen only distinguish as low as the 4th or 5th square. Because of this, you will see far more shades of black and dark levels, and your blacks will be.. blacker with this monitor which is ideal for just about everything.
The contrast and lighting out of box are very nice and the colors are very nice as well. Although the default color setting is “warm” but if you switch it to “normal” you’re golden.
Touch control on the base is unique and easy to use making it a breeze to change settings. The base itself also sports a feature I haven’t seen before in that it can also be use for wall mounting.
Overall aesthetic of the monitor is very pleasing and it matches very well with apple products due to the brushes aluminum bezel and stand.
Cons:
The only cons I can muster are very minor and don’t warrant taking away a star, but they are present nonetheless.
The base has a blue light on the bottom which stays activated at all times. I have not found a way to turn this off and it is rather distracting in a very dark room.
Also, While the brushed aluminum is very aesthetically pleasing, it is a bit shinier than the aluminum apple uses and as a result the bezel can reflect a decent amount of light which can be slightly distracting depending on the rooms lighting.
Bottom Line:
All things considered this is a very solid monitor at an amazing price point. For picture quality as well as aesthetics you will not find a better alternative within $50.
