I have forever been the guy who swore by 20 dollar cases, always laughing at my friends who spent almost as much as a CPU on their case, but today I eat my humble pie. My current rig was running hot (like it would get mad at me and shut itself down once in a while) so I sucked it up and read all the reviews I could, and finally settled on the Dark Fleet 85, partly because it was cool looking, but mostly because everthing I read said it had amazing air flow and was big enough for anything.

My setup is an XFX X58i motherboard, an i7 950 chip cooled by one of those self contained Corsair H60 waterblocks, 24 gigs of Corsair DDR3, my amazing lasts-forever generic dvd-rw, a WD Green 2 tb hard drive, and finally a single HD 5870 (this upgrade is next.) It is all powered by my trusty (5 year old) battleship of a powersupply, my Ultra X3 1600.

After swapping into this cavernous enclosure, and carefully routing the cables through the space behind the motherboard tray, my temps dropped almost 30 degrees C. This is not due to weather changes…I live in a condo that is 70 degrees F all the time with very little humidity, rather it is purely due to the improved airflow this case provides.

My chip which would sit at around 67 degrees C now is running at 42, and my HD5870, which was always right around 74 degrees C under load, now reports a mere 44 degrees.

Although I’ll be the last one to say it, as I’m as stubborn as they come, this case is truely badass.

This case is a full tower which gives plenty of space for cooling and the 7 fans on it keep everything very cool. I have my graphics card overclocked and it has no problem with heat at all. The four usb ports on the front are nice and the hot swap bay and the connectors for hard drives inside were a great idea. If you need a good case for a gaming computer, look no further!

Hopefully after dealing with Antec (and their massive 6 hours a day their support runs) I’ll be able to post an addendum.

Anyway, this thing arrived today and I ported all my hardware into it. I fired it up and things looked good. No forgotten cables, all my devices were as expected. So, I bundle all my cables and finish the assembly.

Once it’s on a couple minutes I smell burning plastic. I start trying to figure out where it’s coming from and then notice the smoke pouring out of my USB port. Apparently the power cable for the SATA dock up top had some sort of issue and was overheating terribly. I’ve now got a melted bezel around my front panel.

The worst part, though, is that my main data drive was on the same circuit as the SATA dock and I have a 1TB drive that will no longer spin up.

So, I’m out 1TB of data, I have an office that stinks like melted plastic, and I’m out several hours of work and troubleshooting.

I hope Antec will respond quickly, but if they’re like most technology companies I’m not going to be too hopeful.
