Updated: good choice for a second monitor, September 11, 2011

This review is from: Viewsonic’s VA2033-LED 20-Inch Widescreen LED Monitor (Black) (Personal Computers)

I bought this to replace an aging Samsung 19 inch LCD. It’s a second monitor on a two monitor setup. The picture is bright and crisp, very useful for office programs, email etc.

However, the image quality is very desaturated. I played with the monitor controls every which way to cure this, but there’s no taming it. Images are washed out regardless of what they say about deep blacks etc. in their promo. I can take a image and split it between my monitors and see the difference.

I’m a photographer and have a good eye.

It is inexpensive and does handle mundane tasks very well. However, if you plan to watch movies on your computer or view photos, or edit photos, don’t buy this.

** Update: a commenter advised adjusting the gamma settings for this monitor with the video card tools. I opened up the nVidia control panel and was able to bring back the saturation, tweak the brightness and, all in all, make this much better. I still wouldn’t recommend this for serious photo editing where you need to match color to print, but for $120, this is a very good deal for a second monitor.

I bought this monitor to replace a 20 inch DCLCD LCD monitor that was just two years old (the power supply board burned up). The Viewsonic VA2033-LED is a great monitor. The lighting and color is much better than the LCD was. There’s a default setting in the monitor where if a program changes the resolution (which is pretty common with many 3D games) a “resolution notice” will appear on the screen stating that you are not using the recommended resolution. This notice can be turned off by entering the setup menu with the buttons on the front of the monitor.
I recommend this monitor to anyone looking for a 20 inch monitor.

Before buying, check the resolution on this monitor to be sure it’s going to meet your needs. At 1600×900, it doesn’t have a lot of vertical space, so if you’re wanting something for gaming or Photoshop, you may want to pass on this. On the other hand, if you just want something for spreadsheet, word processing, or general internet use, this is not bad at all.

Different copies of this monitor would seem to vary greatly in picture quality. Another reviewer mentioned extreme desaturation, but mine almost has the opposite problem. While calibrating it for photo editing, I had to pull the colors way back – they were actually too bright and vibrant. The adjustability that I’d like isn’t quite there, but this isn’t a professional-grade monitor so that’s to be expected. Contrast on this monitor is excellent, blacks are very close to true black. Overall, it seems as if it’s tuned for business use.

There’s no adjustable height here, nor any rotation. There’s a small degree of tilt, but that’s about it. Cable management is poor. But, look at the price. If any of those things are important to you, you’re going to spend more money than this.

The LED backlight is a high point, here. Not only does it contribute to the great contrast, this monitor should last for many years. Fluorescent (CCFL) backlights, which have been much more common, simply don’t last. When they go out, your monitor is trashed, as it’s usually only slightly more expensive to replace the monitor than the backlight. LED backlights can be expected to last ten times as long as CCFL backlights, 100,000 hours or more. Power consumption is negligible with this monitor, which is a bonus for your utility bill as well as your UPS runtime.

I bought this on sale to use as a second monitor, and it’s served me well in that capacity. Just know what you’re getting (and what you’re not) with this monitor, and it’s a good buy.
