    Nice 16:10 monitor!, January 28, 2011

I was looking for a 16:10 monitor in a nice size for computer and work related use, with some gaming on the side. 22 inches is a nice size where I can have multiple windows open on the screen and I can see things a little more clearly with my not so perfect eyesight. The price was a factor too, this monitor was a nice price for a 22 inch.

I may mess with the colors some down the road, but they so are good right out of the box, I haven’t even thought about it yet. It’s very bright too. If you don’t like bright monitors, you may not like this one, but I love a little brightness in a monitor, so it’s perfect for me. The screen is not glossy, but the bezel is glossy, it’s not distracting at all and looks nice sitting on the desk. A lot of monitors nowadays use touch sensitive buttons, which I dislike. This monitor has the more old style buttons, with a nice clicky sound when pressed. Good solid buttons! It’s a little thing, but also a big thing to me.

The 4:3 aspect ratio was also a big deciding factor in what kind of monitor I get. I use a lot of old programs that only work in a 4:3 aspect ratio. When they are used on a widescreen monitor with no 4:3 support, they get stretched to fit the monitor and it ends up being a pain to look at. The 4:3 on this monitor works like a dream. I set it once, and it’s set for every resolution that uses 4:3, don’t have to do anything more.

The speakers are quite good for basic usage. Anything involving games, movies, or music, and you’ll want some speakers, but these built in ones sound very nice for casual use. The monitor does not raise and lower, but it can be tilted.

Note on the 4:3 aspect ratio: If you have trouble setting it to use the 4:3 aspect ratio, here is how to do it. If your resolution is set at a widescreen resolution, the 4:3 aspect ratio in the OSD menu will be greyed out. Now set your desktop resolution to any 4:3 resolution, something like 1024×768. After your resolution is changed, go into the OSD menu and the 4:3 aspect ratio will now be selectable. After you select it, change the desktop resolution back to the normal 1680×1050(which is what this monitors native resolution is). Now whenever you use a program that uses a 4:3 aspect ratio, it will automatically use it.

I am very happy with the monitor so far, it has exceeded my expectations. I’ve had very bad experiences with monitors in the past, if this one lasts, I will be using it for years to come.

I bought this to replace a 20 year old Sony 20″ Trinitron. Actually, I should be writing about the Trinitron more. I paid $1800 for it 20 years ago, but it has been used on so many computers I cannot recall them all. It was still perfect, but dumped it because I was moving and had a hernia, and could not lift it. This monitor is light, wide, bright, crisp, and the 1680×1050 makes for a much more readable monitor than those silly 19″ 1080P monitors that seem to be just about all you can find in a store these days.
