Pretty display! Poor stand design. Good monitor for the layman., June 21, 2011

Note: This review has been updated, please check out the updated section below after reading. I’ve added a star to the rating since updating.

This monitor was to replace my old 19 inch full frame BenQ which died on me last week. I had been using it as a secondary monitor to my 22inch gateway wide. Figured I’d upgrade the 22 and use it as the secondary from now on since it has a stuck pixel that I can’t get rid of.

This new monitor shines standing next to that older gateway. The color is vibrant and blacks are nice and deep, and the display is nice and crisp. I set this monitor up and out of the box it looked great. Win 7 recognized it immediately as my main display and configured itself to use both monitors. Know this however, this monitor does not come with DVI input, only VGA and HDMI so if you are planning to purchase you need an adapter to convert HDMI to DVI or a Graphics card with HDMI out. This wasn’t a problem for me since I have HDMI out on my graphics card and luckily I was aware of the lack of DVI when I bought it. This doesn’t really hurt my rating though as the adapter isn’t really that expensive it just would have been nice if they had included it. You’ll also need an HDMI cable which is also not supplied.

Back to the review, as I said this monitor looked good out of box with no tuning. I spent maybe five minutes messing with settings before I was happy. I DID NOT install the MagicTune software as I have heard horror stories about it in the past but other people appear to be using this and the drivers and are really happy with the product.
The fact that they put cable routing into the base is nice, however the way the monitor sits on the base’s neck is very concerning. I messed around with this for about 45 mins trying to get the screen to snap onto the neck but never happened. I pushed it on as far as it would go but it comes back off easily and pretty much just balances on the end of the neck. It’s almost as if they are relying on cable tension to hold it in place. Not a wise move, hopefully there is a way to snap it in place that I don’t know about I plan on working on that later tonight. Just having the screen teetering on the end of the neck has me very worried I’ll come home from work one day with the screen laying flat on my keyboard.

I am not a spec slave so if you wanna get into a discussion about TN panels vs. IPS panels I’m not your guy. As my review says this is a great monitor for the layman, despite its poor stand design, which may also be my own operator’s error.

Anyone who knows how to get the monitor to secure itself to the base please review this item and put that info into the review or reply to my review. It would help so many others.

UPDATE: As I said I would work on the stand issue when I got home from work. I turned the monitor all the way around and began pushing the neck of the stand into the monitor gradually increasing the force and it finally made a faint clicking sound. I was too scared when I first got this monitor of pressing too hard and causing screen distortion but now that it wasn’t 11 at night and I wasn’t tired I was able to get a better working angle and try my hand at it again. Wish the stand was a little easier to lock into place but it does feel sturdy now and I’m no longer afraid its going to fall onto my keyboard. Also can lower the tilt angle to where I like it. The viewing angle isn’t terrible anyway but I prefer my monitors pointing more directly. Hope this helps anyone else who may have had questions. This monitor is a solid buy for anyone just remember to give it a little extra pressure when trying to attach the stand.

Serious, Accurate Review of the Samsung S27A550H, December 1, 2011

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: Samsung S27A550H 27-Inch Class LED Monitor – Black (Personal Computers)

Ok, so I read a bunch of reviews on Amazon which made my monitor-buying experience very difficult. I am glad that, in the end, I did not listen to the negative reviews on this website and went with my gut. Samsung has always offered me quality products for fair, reasonable prices. My previous monitor was a 22″ Samsung LCD monitor, and so it was time to upgrade. The following review is offered to clarify a lot of the issues that people have had with this monitor, and dispel any negative feedback you may have read.

Let me start by ranting about idiots who give a product one star because they received sub-standard customer service, or because their box was slightly dented upon arrival. You are rating the product, its functionality, and its quality–you are not rating something that has no bearing on the product. Yes, make note of any customer service issues, or packaging deficiencies in your review, but don’t give a product one star because of it! You are doing a great disservice to all of us trying to buy a product.

Ok, sorry, onto the review. A lot of the negative feedback on this product has to do with the stand. I don’t know if people are just moronic, or if I am some sort of superior being that will wake-up one day and shoot lightning bolts from my eyes; but seriously, all you have to do is firmly attach the neck to the monitor, you hear a faint ‘click’, and Voila–done! The base is idiot-proof because there is a locking screw that you just twist into the neck. Not sure what the issues are here folks? And, I appreciate the one dude who updated his review and explained that he was worried to put to much pressure on it, but after he did, it snapped into place. It’s nice to see people fix their reviews. Don’t be afraid to put a little pressure on it and then pull at it after you snap it in to make sure it doesn’t go anywhere. Your not holding a newborn in the NICU, it is a monitor that gets tossed around in its factory packaging a lot more than you care to think. Putting a little added pressure on the neck of the display isn’t going to break it–trust me. Plus, even if it did, just return it and say it came to you that way…

Second. For those people having issues with software, I have used this monitor on both Windows Vista and Windows 7 with no issues. It is a plug-and-play monitor! One review had an issue with it on XP. I hooked it to my buddy’s XP-based laptop and, wouldn’t you know it, it turned right on with no issues and perfect display. I can only attribute issues to plug-and-play technology as user-errors.

The display: The monitor is simply the most beautiful display I have ever had in my home. Nicer than both of my LCD TV’s and definitely nicer than my previous monitor. I will agree with one reviewer that the screen is definitely bright! I did lower the factory stock 100 brightness down to 75 and it seems to be better. I think it has something to do with how close I sat to my old screen which is no longer necessary. I pushed the monitor back on my desk a bit and it seems fine; but yes, it is bright!

Price: I got this monitor BRAND NEW for 279.99 (+14.95 shipping) from MAARS Inc. fulfilled by Amazon. Again, BRAND NEW. All of the factory plastic was on it, with the original manuals and cables in their original packaging, and the 3-year warranty. AMAZING! Everywhere else, the cheapest I could find it was $379.99 + shipping + tax. I could have bought a refurbished one on Walmart.com for $279.99–but I am thrilled that i found this for the same price BRAND NEW. AWESOME!!

The Controls: Alright, so a couple people had issues with the ‘touch-panel’ controls on the monitor. Ok, these controls are simple to navigate and easy to see under normal lighting for a 26 year old male (me). I suppose if you are over the age of 75, or have poor eye sight–then yes, I could see that as very slightly impeding your ability to use the functionality controls on the lower right portion of the monitor. Otherwise, for most people, the controls are easily accessible and easily readable. Lastly, a couple reviewers stated that there was no ‘tactile’ feel to the buttons. That is correct because it is a ‘touch panel’. There are no buttons. You simply lightly tap your finger on the icon and it selects that option.

Overall Quality: This monitor is amazing. I could not be happier with the quality. Honestly, it is worth the $399.99 that some websites charge; but here on Amazon, through MAARS at $279? This is a STEAL!! 3 years ago I bought my 22 inch for $299.99 and I just bought a 27″ of better quality for cheaper! Crazy! There is absolutely no reason that you should not buy this monitor. Do not let any of the negative reviews sway you, this monitor is simply amazing. If Amazon let me give 24123434234 stars out of 5, I would.

Great for video & games, ok for text, July 9, 2011
    By
    Zed (Houston, TX) –

This review is from: Samsung S27A550H 27-Inch Class LED Monitor – Black (Personal Computers)

I have had this monitor hooked up to my Mac laptop and Windows7 machines for a few days now and wanted to share a few thoughts.

Overall this is a good inexpensive monitor. Large screen, VERY bright, etc. 1920×1080 (1080p) video and down looks great, as do games. Text however (like for development or writing) looks terrible at 1080p (no clean edges to the text, fuzzy). However, if you change the screen resolution to 1776×1000 the text is fine. Go figure.

There are a good number of adjustments, but not exactly intuitive. The screen is super bright… too bright. It is almost making my eyes water looking at black text on a white background if I don’t turn the brightness way down.

Overall I’m happy with the purchase. Large screen, for a reasonable price. If you are planning on using this for development however, just be aware you aren’t going to get the full 1920×1080 pixels.
