    Awesome Monitor, December 12, 2010

This review is from: Samsung P2770FH 27-Inch Full HD LCD Monitor (Rose Black) (Electronics)

I got this monitor for a great deal at a local warehouse store. It looks amazing and it’s huuuuge. And surprisingly, it’s super light (which makes it easy to pick up / install). One of the things I like about it is the audio out and optical audio out ports on the back of the monitor. This makes it so that I can plug in my speakers directly into the monitor as opposed to the back of my computer and it’s easy to use multiple HDMI devices without having to mess with audio input plugs.

I did only buy this a couple days ago, so I wouldn’t be aware of any long-term issues; but it’s been working like a champ so far. The main reason I wanted to post this review is because of all the misleading bad reviews on here…

The people posting bad reviews on here have some serious hangups. One person is complaining about his video card being sub-par, but blames the monitor anyway. Another guy’s comment is complaining about the number of HDMI ports (honestly, why would you need more than one for a monitor?) and false advertising (I haven’t seen any site claim that there are 2 hdmi pots). The people who experienced touch button issues are probably validated, but I have had zero problems using those buttons. One person also mentioned that larger monitors should have higher resolutions, and such monitors do exist (for about $1,000); however, you shouldn’t expect that from a monitor in this price range.

This monitor is beautiful and performs great. When you plug it in with HDMI you have to go into the menu > setup and reset > scroll down to input, and change to PC. It looks like crap if it’s set up as TV which it defaults to.

The only thing I don’t like about this monitor is the Starlight Touch Button menu buttons on the front. They are a pain to use, each button requires being pushed at a different pressure to register. But once you’ve done that once, you’re done.

I didn’t install the CD that came with the monitor. I didn’t see any reason to when I plugged it in and it worked.

I recently picked up this monitor after several weeks of exhaustive research and, for the most part, I am completely satisfied. The size of this display is truly staggering so make sure it will not be too much in your particular circumstances (I had to rearrange my desk to make room for it). Asthetically this is the sexiest monitor I have found at 27″. The “Touch of Color” cabinet adds a level of sophistication to an already eye-pleasing design. Its a very subtle red and looks amazing. The screen will tilt back about 25 degrees but there is no height adjustment. The stand is slightly flimsy as well, but this is not a problem on a sturdy desk. LED touch-button OSD is not as responsive as I would like but certainly not bad. Only has one HDMI and DVI (no VGA) but comes with a VGA-to-DVI cable. External power supply is a bummer too, but the display is very thin for a non-LED).

The display itself is very crisp with excellent sharpness. Text is crystal clear while high-res pics and vids practically jump off of the screen. There is a noticeable amount of light-bleed along the bottom edge of the screen when the screen is dark so bear that in mind. I am running a DVI cable in my particular setup but HDMI works fine as well (just make sure that you change the setting in the OSD to “PC” rather than “A/V” or the text will be blurry).

I compared this monitor to the HP 2711x and 2710m as well as some smaller displays (the XL2370/PX2370/2511x/2509m are all amazing monitors but I was hooked on 27″ after seeing it in person). While it is not LED backlit, the lighting performance of the P2770FH is impressive. Dynamic contrast is 70,000:1 with rich, deep blacks and retina-searing whites but there is still light-bleed and there is a bit of a lag while in “dynamic” mode. After fiddling with the settings I came up with a custom setting which is, in my opinion, stunning.

This is one of the fastest screens in terms of response time on the market today so there is no ghosting to speak of. In fact, the overall performance is much better than that of the P2770HD as far as I am concerned. Its a shame that Samsung appears to be phasing this monitor out in favor of the HD version (I got mine as an open-box display model at a local CompUSA simply because the stocks are so low around the web these days). If you can get your hands on an “FH” I highly recommend it over the “HD” model provided you don’t need an HDTV tuner, speakers, or component hookups.

    PROS:

Crisp, clear visuals with lighning fast response time and an asthetically-pleasing design in an affordable package. Immense size with a relatively small footprint (for a non-LED). Sexy, if finnicky, LED OSD controls. Its a Samsung!

    CONS:

No VGA port, speakers, height adjustment, or LED backlight. Noticeable ligh-bleed along bottom edge of screen. Not LED backlit. Flimsy stand. Resolution at 27″ could be higher than 1920×1080 but that appears to be the new standard.

Overall this monitor is a very good display and is more than adequate for the home or business user. Being a TN panel, the P2770FH suffers from some viewing-angle issues but it is no where near as bad as some reviewers have made it out to be. I couldn’t be happier with my decision. The only real competition is HP with their 2711x/2710m but both of those displays are glossy and I prefer matte. The picture is on par with any other TN panel monitor and the asthetic appeal of the cabinet is truly breathtaking. I wholeheartedly recommend this monitor to anyone who needs a classy-looking but cutting edge display for their home or office. And did I mention that its HUGE!!
