Doubling the capacity density as data center professionals across the globe work to meet growing enterprise needs, they face the dilemma of storing more data in the same footprint while also reducing power and HVAC consumption. The new UltrastarTM A7K2000 provides twice the data storage capacity of the
prior generation Ultrastar A7K1000 drive, and does so using fewer watts. It is now possible to achieve a colossal 1.2 petabytes (PB) in the footprint of a standard 19-inch enterprise storage rack by deploying the 2TB A7K2000 in a stack of ten 4U, 60-bay enclosures.

Operating at 7200 RPM, the Hitachi Ultrastar A7K2000 offers better overall performance than slower-RPM, capacity-oriented drives at impressively low power-consumption rates. When compared to the previous generation Ultrastar A7K1000, the A7K2000 offers up to a 155% improvement in sustained data transfer rate, and a 120% improvement in watts-per-GB. With
five Advanced Power Management modes, a 36% reduction in watts during low

    Great drives!, January 18, 2011

I recently picked up a Synology DS1511+ NAS and wanted good hard drives to put in them so that it would not hinder its performance. The Hitachi Ultrastar is a server grade hard drive that combines durability with eco-friendliness. While most green drives run at 5400 to 5900RPM, the Ultrastar operates at 7200RPM and knows when to power down when not needed. Overall, I am very pleased with these units will look forward to future 3 TB versions of the drive.

During my initial data dump from 4 existing hard drives (internal drive, another NAS, and 2 USB external drives) to my RAIDed setup in the DS1511+, I was able to get consistent 75-90MB/s write speeds for 10+ hours. I did think these drives were a bit loud in the beginning but now that we’re using it more for reads instead of writes, the drives and the NAS are running a lot quieter.

If you are using your NAS mainly for backup, archiving and storage, then you may want to look into other green drives as they are a ton cheaper and do work very well for those purposes. If you need your NAS to be a media hub, streaming music, photos and HD movies to a number of PC’s in the house at the same time, then you may want to look at one of these drives. Yes, they are a bit expensive and may even be overpriced for home use but the warranty and quality makes up for it. Nothing is more annoying than lost data or hiccups during media playback. With these drives, you can relax comfortably knowing they’ll do their jobs.

I’m following in Wei’s footsteps. Bought a Synology 1511+ and put 5 of these drives in it. My glowing review of the Synology speaks for itself – best in class. These drives compliment it, and have not missed a beat with heavy use. They are high performance, quiet, reliable, and trouble free. I’ve always had that with Hitachi. Highly recommended.

You pay more, but the drive is of a higher quality. this is the same drive we buy for the data center for enterprise data. Expect to use it for years and amortize out the cost delta, it is well worth it. I bought two for use in a Netgear ReadyNas Duo, very happy with the result.
