First flash drive to ever die on me (UPDATED 1/3/2011)., December 8, 2010

I had purchased this flash drive back in July (about 6 months ago) and used the drive fairly lightly (I’ve never deleted anything off of it, and had not even reached half of the capacity of the drive). I was highly pleased with the speed, storage capacity, and how overall sturdy this thing appeared to be. The flash drive’s external aluminum case is still in great condition and really does seem to protect the drive well. I mostly did buy it for its durability – as the drive often contains the latest versions of my most important files, I wanted to make sure my primary flash drive could survive virtually anything to prevent having to recover data from an outdated backup.

Sadly, the ability to take a beating doesn’t help at all when the internals of the device just fail. Windows, Ubuntu, and Mac OSX all fail to recognize and mount the drive. I know, such failures happen, but it does mean I was not happy with the particular drive I received then. For comparison, my original 128MB flash drive from high school (over 11 years ago) still functions flawlessly, as does over a dozen other flash drives I have owned since then. For a “rugged” device with such a premium price, I just feel disappointed with a failure after 6 months of relatively light use.

UPDATE 1/3/2011: While waiting for my RMA replacement (over 3 weeks now), I did some more research on the drive failure after reading another review posted a few below mine that also mentioned a failure. It appears the drive obtaining a state of “0MB while constantly flashing” to be a commonplace occurrence. For the original thread of issues on Corsair’s tech forums, google for: “Flash Voyager GTR 32 Gb not working”. As mentioned in that thread, a firmware update was just made available a few weeks ago to correct the problem and can be found on the corsair site by googling: “Firmware Update for Flash Voyager/Survivor GTR 32/64GB”. (Posting the thread titles as not sure if links are allowed in reviews).

While it is good that Corsair is making a firmware update available now, it doesn’t excuse releasing a bugged firmware in the first place that caused the death of my data. As it wasn’t just a “regular it happens” failure, I’ve reduced my rating to one star.

I absolutely love the concept of the Corsair and I also have a 16gb survivor with which I have absolutely no problem with so far. The problem is 1 month after getting the 32gb new, it stopped working, continual blinking blue light and saying to insert it into a drive. Well it is inserted. If I hadn’t had everything backed up on my 16gb and my Toshiba external HD except for some movies which I lost, I would be extremely pissed. Now I’m just extremely disappointed in this particular drive and am reading some not so good threads about this issue on Corsair’s forum. I got a RMA but after this episode, I’m not very confident in this particular drive. I’ve had my 16gb survivor for over a year and the 10 year warranty and build is what made me confident in buying this one. Gotta say the safety of your info and what you put it in is up to you. I always use it on a desktop PC and wait for the safe to remove flag before removing. This seems to be a firmware issue they have issued a update on but too late to help me. Darn, because I really like this drive!

I was shocked when I received this how big it was. It’s way too long. So I sent it back and ordered the 16 GB model in the blue label and that was much better. I’m not sure why they felt the need to go so long with this GTR version but beware of how long it is. They are very well made though and I do like the regular version.
