Nice board for HTPC, Poor firmware update and software, October 7, 2011

It has everything you would expect for HTPC build. Optical sound, gigabit lan, usb 3.0, hdmi, displayport, DVI, eSATA.

After the BIOS update to 0125, there’s a menu to change the fan speed and thermal settings. I made mine to run very quiet with a target temperature at 60C. It never reaches that temperature in my Lian Li Q11 case. I have a i3-2120, and it usually stays around 30-40C. There’s also an option for quick boot which skips detecting everything on POST so it boots up into Windows 7 really quick. Intel Desktop Utilities still has some bugs detecting the HDD temperature so I uninstalled it.

One thing it lacks is USB 3.0 internal connectors. I don’t know if this is standardized yet, but I can’t hook up my Lian Li internal usb 3.0 connector because of this.

After the recent 0130 BIOS update (which was pulled down from the download section), the board is bricked and the BIOS recovery method didn’t work. I have to get a replacement now and intel was very helpful for replacing it under warranty.

    Updated 1/17/2012:

This is where my bad experience from intel starts.

Intel sent me a refurbished junk board (had messy sticky stuff all over and several solder marks) which had a defective temperature sensor, so I had to go through a second RMA process. My second replacement board was also a refurbished, I can still see several re-soldering jobs and goo and stuff on the board. I updated to the latest firmware 0125 at the time, and have been using it since then.

Inside the BIOS, if I label the second fan as ‘Inlet’, the speed doesn’t get reported. This is a bug, and was announced as fixed after couple months.

As of Jan 15, 2012, I updated the BIOS to the latest 0146. The bug which fan speed not being reported was fixed, but they fixed it in a sloppy work-around type of job. Even after I change the label, when I go back to main screen, it just shows as ‘Rear fan’ but reports the speed. Then what is the purpose of changing the label in the sub-menu?

Another problem, to update the BIOS, there are two steps involved. First step is like any other motherboard, you can update it pretty easily. The second step to do is to update using the recovery mode. To do this, you have to open the computer case and remove a jumper from the BIOS setting pin, then reboot with a USB flash drive containing the 0146 BIOS. When I tried this, I was not able to get this part done because nothing showed up on the screen. It still boots up and works, but if I ever need the recovery mode, I know it’s not going to work. Way to go intel!

This board is a mini-ITX, and it’s meant to be sitting in a very small cramped space. With all these replacements, and attempts to do the BIOS update through recovery mode, I spent so much time just opening up the computer, and putting it back together.

With all these problems, I changed my initial 5 star experience (up to the time where I first contacted intel) to a 1 star (after receiving junk motherboard and all this hassle with updating BIOS).
I DO NOT RECOMMEND INTEL BOARDS.

Very compact with all the video outputs you need. Works as well as the larger m-ATX versions but still runs cool with even the powerful CPU’s.

I bought 3 of these for Windows 7 Media Center HTPCs. It’s the best mobo for this application I’ve found to date. Installed it in a SilverStone SG06 case for a nice compact cool-running system.
