Best Socket AM3+ Motherboard to date. “BUT”, November 15, 2011

    PROS:
This is the best motherboard for the Socket AM3+ platform. It performs great and now with the latest Bios Revision, it’s performs even better.

    CONS:
Asus’s box has Advertisement stating this motherboard was designed for the AMD FX series of CPU’s. My issue is my AMD FX-8120 CPU did not work when I plugged it in and I was forced to waste my money on another CPU just to update the mobo’s bios so it can accept my AMD FX-8120.

My only issue was the FACT Bulldozer does not work on this motherboard without a BIOS UPDATE. So I find it completely unfair that the buyer is forced to either pay for an updated BIOS CHIP which ASUS will send to you for a price and/or buy an original AMD Phenom II CPU just to update the bios before you can plug in a Bulldozer based CPU.

This is an extra cost to the purchaser of the motherboard which you should not have to pay. The BOX clearly states that it fully supports Socket AM3+ 8-Core Bulldozer AMD FX CPU’s so it SHOULD” support them right out of the BOX. At the very least the company could have allowed the user to enter the BIOS so you can update it or set this up in a way where all you would have to do is plug in a USB flash drive and let the motherboard update itself automatically.

ASUS is not the only culprit in regards to this MASSIVE ISSUE. Companies such as Gigabyte and MSI are also to blame.

So what I was forced to do is buy a cheap Socket AM3 Athlon II just to update the bios, then remove it and plug in my Bulldozer. Now what do I do with the Athlon II? Asus should buy it from me at full retail cost.

This was my 2nd time this happend to me and this will be the last time I buy a motherboard that requires another CPU just to update the Bios. Hopefully ASUS will resolve this ASAP so others won’t suffer with this issue.

This motherboard used to have a BIOS issue you could only change by buying a phenom II and upgrading the BIOS. I found an upgrade on the ASUS website.

Works well, when it POSTs., July 6, 2011

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

Asus does know how to make a good motherboard, and this no exception. Quality equipment here all right. Good features, nice looks, and runs well.

However, it isn’t without it’s faults. This board can be extremely picky about the kind of RAM you want to use, so I’d advise you to check the DRAM qualified vendor’s list before you use or purchase RAM. If you don’t, it’ll be hit or miss, and the board might not POST. This happened with me, and the board wouldn’t work until I reseated the CPU and reset the CMOS. The onboard Asmedia Controller is picky, and I’d recommend you disable it in the BIOS, which, by the way, is excellent, and fairly user friendly. I was able to easily clock my DDR3-1600 RAM up to that speed, as the SPD was detected at 1333 at first.

I’m using a Phenom II X4 955 which works well, but as I’m still using the stock cooler, runs a little hot. ~45C idle, 65C high load. Regardless, the board works when it’s configured well, and if you’re using the correct kind of RAM, and you’re a tad lucky. But as for how the board performs, it’s fantastic.

    Recommended for the enthusiast.
