Attractively priced midrange card, be sure to look for deals, February 29, 2012

While the original list price for this video card is $95, there are rebates and sales ongoing which can drive the price down to nearly $50 – that’s how I got mine yesterday. The video card itself is attractively designed; the 100mm fan provides some serious cooling (without having to connect an additional power line) and the blue PCB matches the color of my motherboard (also by Gigabyte) very nicely. The big fan, however, can cover up the PCIx1 slot on some motherboards (including my Gigabyte 78LMT-S2P), which is potentially awkward if you were wanting to use that expansion slot. Installation of both hardware and drivers was easy, and I obtained the latest ATI Catalyst drivers almost immediately upon installation (the driver CD includes, I believe, version 11.5; the latest Catalyst suite at the time of writing is 12.0/12.1). The card includes a VGA (D-Sub) connector for legacy monitors, though if you have a monitor with DVI capability, such as my HP S2031, you will certainly want to use the DVI connector on the card.

Graphics quality in conjunction with my S2031 monitor is excellent so far. I bought this card especially to play the upcoming Guild Wars 2, and while that game (which is in closed beta at time of writing) isn’t out yet, my Windows Experience Index has been boosted from an original, and somewhat lackluster, score of 4.9 with the integrated video that I was originally using to 6.8. The card carries a printed requirement of a 400W minimum power supply, which is less demanding than high-end graphics cards.

Overall, remember that this is essentially a midrange card, but it has ample power and the new price deals make it a very attractive option for those who are looking to upgrade their Radeon video from one of the lower-range cards but can’t afford one of the heavy hitters like the 6870 or 6970. I really would rate it 4.5 stars if I could; I’d like to give it 5 stars but really haven’t had the card in my system long enough.
